joyce manor / big kids 7"

joyce manor have two songs. the first one is a new jam called "new in this light". coming in at 1:17 it's got a catchy chorus: 'i can't see nothing new in light oahh oahh". it could of easily fit on the full length. their second song is a murder city devils cover of "midnight service at the mutter museum". they completely made the song their own. they skipped the intro, cut the organ, added vocal harmonies, and sped up the tempo at the end. i really really like it. big kids have one song called 'pig through a python'. the intro is some world war 2 sound clip about the atomic bomb that would have easily fit on a desaparecidos song. musically it's a little heavier song for big kids. not my favorite, but good nonetheless. the joyce manor side is definitely stronger. my 7" came on a cool lime green color. cool bands. cool songs. cool record. split release between solidarity records and brick gun records.

Joyce manor - s/t

when joyce manor decided to go with 6131 i wondered if their sound would change; if they would cater to those kids. fortunately they delivered the goods. 10 songs in under 20 minutes, this is the perfect length for me. the first two songs on the album are okay, but it really picks up with 'beach community' and doesn't look back. i kind of wish they hadn't re-recorded 'leather jacket' and 'constant nothing'. i can't hear 'constant nothing' without wanting to hear 'done right discount flooring' right after. but those are both great songs and help space out the album nicely. '21st dead rats' is probably my favorite song on the album-the vocals are perfect. i like 'astray petting zoo's' guitar solo the best out of all the songs. that song is a bit slower, but one of the albums best. 'constant headache' is a good closer, and also the longest song on the album. this is all around great pop punk in the vein of jawbreaker and weezer. they are on tour with lemuria and white wives right now. dates are HERE.

summer vacation, media blitz, joyce manor @ the unity church 1.07.11

this was my first time at the unity church in long beach. it was right across the street from roscoes so of course we went. i'm not sure what the name of the first band i saw was, but they sounded like the descendents singing about killing cops and surfing. they smashed a guitar on the ground: pretty punk? haha.

summer vacation was as good as ever. one of the best bands that southern california has to offer.'annual' is my jam. i love that song. mark played with his back to the crowd the entire set. i love his style. they're the best.media blitz played a new song which was great, along with a cro mags cover. jason's mouth was bleeding for most of the set. the crowd was pretty rowdy. the shirt came off like usual, but 'get the fuck out' was the most convincing i've seen them play it. they're getting better and better live every time i see them.

i'd like to note that the bill for this show didn't fit at all, but i liked the bands i went for and so i was extremely happy.with that in mind, people went ape shit for joyce manor. this was the first time i've seen them since may, and they were fun as fuck. the new songs sounded great. 'derailed' and '21st dead rats' were only a few of the new jams we got to hear. i really love the new songs. singing 'five beer plan' was honestly my favorite part of the night though. i wish this song could be re-written a million different ways so that every song i could sing along to like this one. another great show, another night in a row.

joyce manor/summer vacation split 7"

muy autentico records just put out a split 7" by two of my favorite bands. joyce manor picks up where constant headache left off with holiday heart, a minute long pop punk slam dunk. in a change of pace, the bass player, matt, takes lead vocals on my elise. i really like this song a lot - especially the guitar solo at the end. they finish their side with dfhp? barry's vocals are super catchy: "can you climb on the roof/can you yell at the sky/can you see in the dark/can you stay up all night." summer vacation kick off their side with super orgy, a poppy jam filled with na-na-na's. i really like the dual vocals on don't panic, but summer vacations best song on this release is definitely the closer the many faces of mental chillness when mark sings, "you're a blessing/you're a curse/i hope we never marry/ i hope we never see each other again." barry did the artwork which looks great. these are limited to 300: 150 black/150 opaque yellow. i have the yellow vinyl it looks rad. grab these before they're gone!

joyce manor - constant headache :: review

the second show roman candles ever played was with joyce manor at the echo curio. they were still playing acoustic then, and it was just barry and chase on acoustic guitars. i saw them a few more times, and played a couple more shows with them. right before i left for school they started playing electric, and i still haven't had a chance to see them since they made the switch. although i liked there older recordings, nothing really did them justice.

'constant headache' feels like joyce manor's first attempt to showcase their talent. with five songs under ten minutes the e.p. grabs your attention right from the start, squeezes hard, and doesn't let go. 'five beer plan' gives the listener a little breathing room in the middle of the e.p. with a slow bass line before picking back up and ending strong with 'leather jacket,' which happens to be my favorite song on the album. this is really solid pop-punk. it's got all the hooks in all the right places, and enough catchy phrases to bare repeating. i dare you to listen to this only one time: it's impossible.

the band has plans to release this on a 7", but for now you can download it here. make sure to donate . . . the more money we toss their way the sooner they'll have money to record a full length.
