modest mouse documentary

Shot in 1997 by indie filmmaker Rick Madsen, this 36 min documentary filmed during the recording of the Modest Mouse album "The Lonesome Crowded West" will never be released commercially. Artists interviewed for the film include Elliott Smith, Spencer Moody from The Murder City Devils, Doug Martsch of Built To Spill, Sam Coombs of Quasi and Calvin Johnson.

i like the calvin johnson and the spencer moody interviews a lot.

crystal antlers - summer solstice

the new crystal antlers song sounds awesome. i love the new direction. they are one of my favorite local bands (one of the few that made not feel so embarrassed about being from orange county), and i have been following them for what seems like forever now after seeing them play with bronco tatonka at the santa fe cafe years ago, i wound up buying their first 7". their newest 7" was the first record i ever reviewed for this site, and i'm really stoked that they're still making music. got this email from them today seeing that i'm on their mailing list. here is what it said:

Hey there friends,

It's been a while since we've last reached out. We went to Mexico early in the year and spent a little over a month in a barn writing new songs for our second record. When we got back we decided to premiere 3 of those songs with Room 205, our friends practice space hosted by Incase.

Take a minute and check it out the first of them here:

http://goincase.com/room205/crystal-antlers/summer-solstice/

This song is titled Summer Solstice. The songs Knee Deep and Seance will be posted to the site on Nov. 8th and Nov. 15th.

We're currently mixing the record and making some decisions on how best to release it. Sadly, Touch and Go Records, our brief home, has shut it's doors for good and will not be involved this time around.

Hope you like the song and make sure to check back on the site or follow us on twitter to catch the other two when the premiere.

i was a teenage anarchist - video

when i first started hanging out with my 'punk' friends, i still listened to mostly indie rock. they did not want to listen to the get up kids and desaparecidos, and i had no interest listening to the varukers and 46 short. there was not a lot we could agree on, so we usually wound up compromising by listening to ska.

it was the summer of 2005 when i first heard sink florida sink and was blown away. while i was working at dairy queen, someone was kind enough to burn me a copy of the acoustic e.p. about a month later jason asked me if i had heard this band called against me! i said i had. he burned me a copy of as the eternal cowboy and i became a fan for life.

without against me! my knowledge of bands like crass or discharge would have probably been non-existent. they even opened me up to bands like the young pioneers and thankfully to plan-it-x records. against me! always brings the best up and coming punk bands with them on their headlining tours. they have turned me onto a ton of new music. Crime as forgiven by was the first 7" i ever bought, so i have a huge emotional attachment to them.

this was the one band all my friends and i could agree on. being 16 and having a band like against me! was one of the most important things that happened to me. it was the perfect gateway band for getting into punk. it was exactly what i needed. i haven't been too stoked on them in a couple of years. everyone pretty much blew off new wave, myself included. yet, their new single, i was a teenage anarchist, is something special. it's really good. if this is an indication of the rest of the album, we're all in for a treat. plus the video is pretty awesome. it's directed by Marc Klasfeld. enjoy:
