These two slice-of-life folk punk tracks from the creator of The Stowaways zine out of Southern California observe the apathetic, weed-smoking adults our friends have turned into. Solid song structure and lyrics tell of friends shedding their raucous, rebel-rousing youth behind to shut themselves in their rooms and medicate. HUBY reviews Roman Candles Gracious Living 7"

Huby issue 2 has a review of the new roman candles 7" gracious living b/w yellow smile.

Roman Candles: 2 song ep; Gracious Living, Yellow Smile

I've never listened to Roman Candles. I've never seen them live (acoustic or full band). So I was excited to hear this vinyl. This two song ep derives from deep Folk Punk influences about one's surrounding environment. After a couple listens, I really fell in love with Yellow Smile. It's a fun song that has a really cool guitar line. It's pretty rad. As for the first song (gracious living), well there just wasn't anything special to have me reciting it in my head. The same goes for the paper fold. I don't really care about appearances but almost the entire package is red. Next time I would add some different colors to entertain the eyes. It's still a good introduction to the band and I can't wait to hear more songs in the future.

I opened issue #11 to find Christopher personally thanking me for my criticizing his full-size, stapled layout in an earlier review. But he says he wants to stick to the size because he likes it and it’s easier to lay out every month. First of all, Christopher, it’s your zine and you can do whatever you want with it, I’m just here to say what I feel. Second, if you’re doing a zine by yourself every month it’s pretty ridiculous for me to critique whatever corners you choose to cut. That said, I’m glad to be witness to the beginnings of this zine (at issue twelve, it’s only a year old) and I hope to see where this one goes. Each issue is mostly reviews: show reviews, then record reviews, and zine reviews by the ever-enthusiastic Christopher. It’s an un-ironic, un-jaded breath of fresh air and although there’s nothing I am more uninterested in than show reviews (at least until I get that time machine working), he manages to offer a bit of personal insight and criticism to personalize them, such as commenting on the machismo attitude of one of the bands he sees and how it makes him feel uncomfortable. I’m most partial to his zine reviews, though. I have the same criticisms of his interview style (in #11 he interviews Wild Moth, in #12 Ten Thousand Leagues) as I had with earlier issues. The questions are dull and unchallenging; they’re about stuff like when the band got together and about their next record. I think interviews should be written as if the reader never heard of the band, because I haven’t. So I care very little about when their next record is coming out or why someone quit the band, and I’m left with no desire to seek to them out. When I last left the Roman Candles, Christopher had just graduated and told me that that he had sent their last tape for review. End of story, thank god. But the kid is a liar and has also name dropped us in the title of their latest and greatest. Thanks a lot bud. Just make sure to remember me if you become the next Mountain Goats or whoever. This one is all acoustic whimpering, recorded in a post-college depression. My only advice this time is, yes there is life after college, but you sound like a total pussy here. Get tough buddy. You live in SoCal, I want you to go to the Burger Records shop and hang with those dudes, get some trim, party and take some notes on what they're doing. They can help you out of your funk, I'm sure, and also show you how to make tapes that will sell. Power pop, pizza punk, surf garage, whatever, you just gotta do something other than this...(RK)
